They blend the best of both worlds: conventional medicine and integrative alternative medicine. Chiropractic treatment can relieve pain and stiffness in the arms, hands, neck, head, back, hips and legs. Chiropractors are specially trained to analyze the spinal column and structural system.

Every year, more than 3 million Americans try to quit smoking, but only half of them succeed. With the help of acupuncture, you have a greater chance of success! Using acupuncture to quit smoking yields enormous benefits. Aside from taking care of the stumbling blocks that can cause you to resume the habit, acupuncture can help restore your body to a healthy state of balance and well-being. If you are ready to become smoke-free, acupuncture can provide you with the support you need.

MFR is a therapeutic approach for the relief of chronic back, neck and shoulder pain, and can also be used to benefit patients with fibromyalgia. The technique uses palpatory feedback, applying constant tension to an area until a release occurs.

Trained and licensed massage therapists at Springfield Clinic offer massage therapy for various conditions. Massage therapy techniques can decrease swelling and impaired joint mobility, ease muscle spasms and muscle tension and increase circulation to promote healing. Massage also can reduce pain and improve muscle tone. Other benefits of massage therapy include reduced stress and extreme stress, anxiety and pain; improved levels of alertness; enhanced sleep patterns; release of endorphins (the body's natural painkillers); relaxation and increased oxygen supply. Massage also can reduce heart rate and blood pressure and increase energy and immune system activity.

Neuromuscular therapy is a style of bodywork that works with soft tissue (muscle, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and skin) of the body using varying degrees of pressure and movement after evaluating the patient's needs. The therapy is targeted at specific points, often where the trigger points have formed in the muscle, and the massage strokes used depend on the injury or condition. This treatment works to release the point of tension in the muscle.

All classes will be held at Springfield Clinic Chiropractic (355 West Carpenter Street). Call 217.546.5971 to sign-up. All classes are free.

Tips from a chiropractor

Dr. Windie McKay has a list of tips that can save you a sore neck, back and wallet:

  • Use ice for acute pain—never use heat unless suggested by a chiropractor.

  • Do not sleep on your stomach. Sleep on your side or on your back.

  • Place your computer directly in front of you and not to one side of your desk. You do not want to have your head turned in one position all day long.

  • Keep your heel height below one inch. High heels can worsen low back pain.

  • When picking objects from the floor, use your legs and lift straight up. Hold the object close to the body.

  • Do not carry a heavy purse or bag on only one side of your body. Decrease the amount of items in your bags and frequently change shoulders.

  • Take frequent breaks at work if you have a computer-based job. Sitting for prolonged periods of time can worsen low back pain.

  • Drink more water. Dehydration can cause headaches.

  • Cut down on caffeine.

  • Stop smoking.

  • Eat healthy and exercise at least 20 minutes per day.

  • Consider regular massage therapy appointments.

  • Deep breathing can reduce pain.

  • Good posture can prevent lumbar pain.

  • Decreased ranges of motion may indicate you need to see a chiropractor.
